How To Clean
Your Plasma - LCD TV - Laptop.
What's the point of buying a high technology
super screen and then view it through mountains of dust and finger
marks? Here I will explain how you can easily and cheaply clean your
beloved Plasma or LCD TV to get that stunning viewing experience, like
the day you had it delivered, every day. (Read On...) |
Cleaning your PDP,
Liquid Crystal Screen or Laptop
Plasma
& LCD Screens are Porous.
First of
all a warning! Most screens
of this type are porous. This means that any moisture no matter how
slight will be absorbed into the screen. At the least it will leave an
annoying mark that will never come off and at the worst your TV could
suffer any of the symptoms you might expect when you mix water and
electricity.
!!NEVER LEAVE ANY MOISTURE ON YOUR SCREEN!!
Expensive
Anti Static
Many retailers are selling anti static sprays for anything up to
£15 a bottle. I generally think these products are not worth
it. Firstly because with the appropriate tool the dust is gone with one
quick wipe and secondly because it increases the risk that moisture
might be left on the screen. One anti static manufacturer who
recommends spraying their product directly onto the screen says in its
instructions to make sure all the cleaner is wiped off afterwards. I
say. What if the phone rings when your in the middle of cleaning the
TV? And anyway I don't think they are necessary and they are generally
very expensive for a tiny bottle. There are sprays now which actually
clean like CleanSafe
spray. These can help but are still not essential.
Microfibre
cloths
I have just spent 2 paragraphs telling you what not to do, so I suppose
I should get around to telling you how you SHOULD clean a screen. The
answer is a microfibre cloth. These are
simply cloths made out of a fabric whose fibres are much smaller(micro)
than normal cloths.
What this means is that they have the uncanny ability to simply absorb
things which other cloths cannot. Things like finger prints, very fine
dust and splashes from coughs and sneezes. If the mark is not to old a
good microfibre cloth will absorb such marks without the need for any
chemicals even water.
Sometimes if the mark is old, maybe if you have had a screen for
sometime and have only just got around to cleaning it you might need to
use a tiny bit of water (and I mean tiny)
usually a flick onto the cloth (not the screen) (this is type of
occassion where the CleanSafe
spray can help) and this should get rid of crustiest
of finger marks etc.
There are many microfibre cloths on the market. Just be sure to get one
that specifically states being suitable for your screen type. I can
recommend the WOW
screen wipes for just about any screen but then you
probably guessed I would. LOL.
How Do Microfibre
cloths Work - They are just a cloth after all?
Very simply it is all down to the particle size. If you wipe, say a
mirror with a regular cloth then some of the marks are gone, some of
them get moved about a bit and smear and some simply stays put. The
strange thing is that it doesn't matter how hard you wipe it still has
the same effect. This is because the particle size in a regular cloth
prevents it from making contact with the mirror consistentely.
Basically if you could zoom in with a microscopic movie camera it would
be like dragging a fork through some sauce on your plate. It
doesn't matter how hard you do it you cant move the sauce in between
the prongs.
Wipe a hard surface with microfibe and it will make complete and
consistent contact withe the surface. Not only that but anything
absorbable on the surface like finger prints or a bit of a sneeze
(yuck) will be absorbed into the cloth in the same way that water is
absorbed into a regular cloth. They also wipe away regular stuff like
dust etc. Sometimes if a finger mark or something simmilar is old it
leaves a dry hard deposit and additional techniques are required to
shift it. This is often the case when you use a microfiber cleaning
cloth on a screen for the first time.
Great Tip For Top Results
Turn the plasma telivision off to create a totally black surface. Next
position
the screen with a gentle (preferably ambient) light source shining on
it. This will show up every single speck of dust and all the
marks/smears etc. Now clean as described.
How To Get Rid of The Dust and Dirt
Around The Edge of The Screen
Easy. Wrap your credit card up in the cloth. Make sure you wrap it
round several times to 'blunt' the edges. Now wipe with the covered
credit card edge from the screen edge towards the center of the plasma
screen.
Now you should be able to wipe up what was previously stuck at the
edges.
